Day TWELVE: Ninja! Crush

My oldest boy's current app obsession is a game called Spy Mouse.  It has even surpassed Angry Birds.  And Angry Birds Space.  Unheard of in these parts.  It even inspired his Halloween costume choice.  He's going to be a Ninja Cat, one of his favorite characters from the game.  Though no one will know who, or what he is, he doesn't care.  He'll know and he's pumped.  I love that about this stage of childhood.

Enter the library.  And the title, The Boy Who Cried Ninja by Alex Latimer.  It would have been a crime not to pick it up and bring it home.  Really.  Sometimes I get so excited about the potential of a book that the actual book is a let down.  I was so relieved, and pleasantly surprised, when this one turned out to be as awesome as I had hoped.

On the surface, it seems like a boy who cried wolf tale.  But it's so not.  It's quirky.  Off-beat.  Unexpected and wacky.  And, by now you may know, I LOVE THAT IN A BOOK.

Each time the boy's parents confront him for wrongdoing, he insists it wasn't him and blames an unlikely cast of characters.  A cat-burgular-criminal ninja, a giant squid, a sunburned alligator, and a time-traveling monkey -- to name a few.  Latimer keeps you guessing until the very end, wondering if the boy is lying, has an overactive imagination, or is telling the truth.

If you're looking for a nice tale about telling the truth, this might not be your book.  But if you are simply looking for a great book that gloriously suspends reality for 32 pages, do your kids a favor and bring it home and cry "ninja!" in your best crazy high-pitched ninja voice.   Better yet, do it together.  It's so fun.

On a sidenote:  this book reminds me sooooo much of everything I love about Oliver Jeffers.  The writing style, the artwork, the abundance of quirk.  Eerily similar.  But, hey, I'll take it.  Jeffers is still where its at for me -- but this Alex Latimer creation is a great stand in and still gets a double thumbs up from our entire household.
